Experiencing nature in the urban jungle.
The future has arrived: Leipzig Zoo is creating its innovative Zoo of the future which brings together a natural environment for the animals, protection of endangered species, educational activities and a memorable visitor experience.
Tradition creates its own obligations and for this reason Leipzig Zoo, which was founded in the year 1878, started on the road to the Zoo of the future as early as 2000. This innovative concept brings together a natural environment for the zoo's animals, species protection, education and exciting voyages of discovery for visitors in a unique symbiosis. In the course of the project's implementation the zoo has acquired an outstanding reputation with visitors and experts in the field. Today Leipzig Zoo is home to around 850 species and sub-species, and is one of the world’s most modern and prestigious zoos.
A great ape enclosure which is unique across the whole world, Europe's largest numbers of sloth bears and the Gondwanaland tropical experience world, which is opening in the summer of 2011, are only some of the numerous highlights at the zoo's 27-hectare site. The zoo carries out its responsibility towards species protection by implementing more than 40 worldwide breeding programmes.
The changing zoo: as modern as many enclosures were at the time they were established, in many cases they no longer meets today's standards of knowledge and the needs of their occupants. This is why Leipzig Zoo is restructuring its enclosures in accordance with the latest findings on keeping animals in their natural surroundings, and is reconstructing their environment as closely as possible to the original habitat.
