The amphitheater was used for staging gladiatoral combats and fights between animals or between animals and men, so called venationes, which, together with circus performance, were the entertainment preferred by the public of Emerita Augusta.
The amphitheater was built in the year 8 before Christ.
Later when the christianity became the official religion, the theatre was abendonedö Parts of the structure were used as a quarry for other building works.
