Rochester Castle is one of the best preserved castles in England. It lies on the eastern bank of the River Medway. The most striking feature of the castle is its keep, which was built of massive stone and reaches more than 35 meters into the sky. In the Middle Ages Rochester Castle was largely responsible that invasions of England, which arrived from the southeast side, was repulsed.
The massive walls that surround the keep are partly based on the foundations of an old Roman wall, which protected this strategical important position many centuries before.
Rochester Castle was also used in several medieval movies, like the movie "Ironclad".
Today Rochester Castle is managed by English Heritage.
