The deposits of the Laacher See eruption are impressively well preserved here. 13,000 years ago glowing streams of lava and ash lay waste to this region. As a result mighty tuff deposits were formed. The Romans began with the excavation. Here are the remains of a large and complex tunnel system dating back to between the 17th and 19th centuries.
