A mountain range, a castle, a monument – a name that stands for fascinating uniqueness. Today some impressing ruins of the Residence Kyffhausen, one of the largest medieval fortress constructions, have survived. You can enjoy an unforgettable view into the with 176 metre deepest castle well of the world. Anway the mountain with its castle became well-known throughout Germany because of what is hidden inside: “the sleeping Emperor Barbarossa in his subterranen castle”. The Barbarossa-Tale created in the Middle Ages promoted to a national legend in the 19th century is one of the most famous tales in Germany today. It finally leads to the erection of the 81-metre-high Memorial of Emperor Wilhelm belonging to the Romanic ruins of the residence Kyffhausen. Wilhelm – Prussian King and German Emperor - who made the Barbarossa Tale come true by the Unification of the German Empire of 1871 and so released the old Redbeard who gushingly was named “the Whitebeard on Redbeard’s throne”. Exhibitions in the memorial and the castle museum inform about the history of the castle, the tale itsself and the memorial. Who spares no pains climbing the 247 steps up to the Emperor’s Crown – the dome of the monument - can enjoy a fascinating panoramic view over the landscape of the Harz mountains with Mount Brocken to the mountain ranges of the Thuringian Forrest, nice weather provided.
